Morgan ejected by 1B umpire in fifth

Pirates centerfielder Nyjer Morgan was ejected by first base umpire Tim McClelland at the end of the fifth inning in Monday's game against the Mets. With runners on first and second and one out in the inning, Morgan grounded sharply to pitcher Johan Santana who started a 1-6-3 double play. Only Morgan felt he was safe at first, a claim later backed up by TV replays.

Immediately after being called out by McClelland, Morgan slammed his helmet into the dirt and apparently said enough to warrant an ejection as McClellan tossed him immediately. Morgan had a few more heated words with the first base ump and had to be pulled away by first base coach Perry Hill before leaving the field.

Pirates manager John Russell also came out to argue the call, but to no avail.

Morgan was replaced in left field by Craig Monroe.
