RHP Evan Meek to 15-day DL; RHP Steven Jackson recalled
Right-hander Evan Meek suffered a left oblique strain while pitching in the ninth inning of Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Rockies and had to be placed on the 15-day disabled list because of the injury on Wednesday.
The Pirates have recalled righty Steven Jackson from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Meek's spot in the bullpen.
Since joining the big-league club in late April, Meek has made 41 appearances out of the 'pen for Pittsburgh. He has a 3.45 ERA with 42 strikeouts and 29 walks. The losses of Sean Burnett and John Grabow had also forced Meek into a later inning role and one that he has had pretty good success in so far.
Meek is the second Pittsburgh reliever to land on the DL in the past week. Lefty Donnie Veal is currently out with a sprained left index finger.
For Jackson, this will be his third different stint with the Pirates this season. He had been up with Pittsburgh earlier this month before being sent back to Indianapolis on Aug. 7 because of some struggles and the Pirates' need for a fresh bullpen arm.
In 20 relief appearances with the Pirates, Jackson has allowed 11 earned runs in 22 2/3 innings. He has struck out 13 and walked 14.
