One day after interviewing the Brewers’ most recent manager, the Pirates brought Milwaukee hitting coach Dale Sveum to Pittsburgh to interview for the organization’s managerial opening.

A former infielder and Minor League manager in the Pirates’ organization, Sveum has spent the last five seasons on Milwaukee’s Major League coaching staff. Sveum, 46, previously worked as the team’s bench coach and third base coach, and he just completed his second year as the Brewers’ hitting coach. He also served as interim manager for the final 12 games of the ’08 season, a year in which Milwaukee advanced to the playoffs.

Sveum’s 12-year playing career ended with Pittsburgh in 1999. Overall, he appeared in 862 games for seven different teams and finished with a .236 career average. A first-round Draft pick in 1982, Sveum’s best season came in 1987, when he hit 25 homers and drove in 95.

The Pirates hired Sveum to coach their Double-A Altoona affiliate in 2001, and Sveum remained in that role for a total of three seasons. He went a combined 213-211 with the Curve and was named the Eastern League’s top managerial prospect after the ’03 season.

He then joined the Red Sox, where he served as the third-base coach in Boston for two seasons.

The Pirates have now interviewed six managerial candidates. The rest of the list includes: Eric Wedge, Bo Porter, John Gibbons, Ken Macha and Jeff Banister.
